The knight says it early, when his project still looks like a joke to everyone but him. The novel spends nine hundred pages asking whether choosing an identity can make it true. “Facts are the enemy of truth” is a line from the twentieth-century musical Man of La Mancha, not from Cervantes. The book is funnier and crueler than the musical, and much more interested in books.
