Chaucer is translating an old complaint, Hippocrates’ “art is long, life is short,” and aiming it at love and at poetry at once. Middle English leaves the sentence close enough to hear. He spent a life in customs houses and royal errands writing the poems on the side. The craft outran the life, which is what the line predicts.
