The words are an inscription on the gate of Hell, not Dante’s advice and not God’s, exactly. He and Virgil read them as they pass in. The line has been borrowed for offices and examinations ever since, which flattens it. In the poem, hope is abandoned because the place is the refusal of change. The travelers, notably, continue.
