He published it in French, on purpose, so that people who did not read Latin could follow an argument that threw out everything he could doubt. The Latin “cogito, ergo sum” came later. What survives the doubt is not a personality and not a body. It is the bare fact of a mind doing the doubting. Modern philosophy keeps beginning again from this very small island.
