The popular form is “God does not play dice with the universe.” What he wrote to Born is warmer and sadder: the theory says a lot, but it does not bring us closer to the secret of the Old One, and he does not believe that He throws dice. He was objecting to a physics of fundamental chance, not auditing a casino. The line about insanity and repetition is not his and has no source in his papers. This one does, and it shows him losing an argument with grace and stubbornness.
