The poem answers with similes — a raisin in the sun, a sore, a load — and then a line by itself: or does it explode? Lorraine Hansberry took one of the similes as a title. Hughes is writing about Black life in a city that keeps asking people to wait. The question is the poem. He does not pretend to be above the explosion he names.
