The poem answers Whitman by name and by cadence, and then describes being sent to the kitchen when company comes. The singer’s confidence is not that the country is kind. It is that he is already inside the song. Hughes wrote it young, in the Harlem Renaissance, and spent a life making a public language for Black America that could be printed in newspapers. The comma in “I, too” is doing as much work as the verb.
