What the early accounts do record is a refusal: his conscience was captive to scripture, and he would not recant unless convinced by it. The famous two sentences appear in later tellings and may be a margin that migrated into the speech. This book keeps them, labeled as disputed, because they are the words history chose to remember, and because the refusal underneath them is not in doubt.
