Walden is a book about an experiment of two years and two months, not a personality type. The desperation, as he describes it, is resignation mistaken for necessity: farms, debts, and the opinion of the town. He was prickly and local and more dependent on his friends than the myth allows. The diagnosis has outlived the cabin.
