Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, a generation later, is the witness we have for the prayer. Tyndale had been betrayed, imprisoned, and refused the one thing he asked of his life: that a plowboy should know scripture better than a priest. Within three years Henry VIII had licensed an English Bible drawn heavily from Tyndale’s words. The prayer is specific. It names a king, not a mood.
