John Donne

1572–1631

Poet, then dean of St Paul’s

The early poems are intimate to the point of argument. The later sermons take the same intensity up into the pulpit. The bell tolls in a meditation written while he thought he was dying, and then did not.

In the canon

  1. Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.Devotions upon Emergent Occasions
  2. Death, be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so.Holy Sonnets
