“Survival of the fittest” is Herbert Spencer’s phrase, which Darwin later borrowed with credit. Darwin’s own last sentence is not a hymn to winners. It is a picture of life branching from a few forms, or one, into a beauty he does not try to rank. He had waited twenty years to publish, and he ends on wonder rather than on combat. The margin is the place to put Spencer back outside the sentence.
