The trial record does not contain this sentence. The story that Galileo muttered it after recanting the motion of the Earth appears more than a century later. What the record does contain is a forced recantation, and a man who had already seen the moons of Jupiter through a telescope. The line survived because people needed him not to have meant the recantation. They may have invented the proof.
