Montaigne retired to his tower to write about himself and ended up inventing the essay as a form: a trial, not a verdict. The sentence follows Cicero following Plato. He is not recommending gloom. He thinks an unpracticed death panics, and a considered one takes its place among the other facts. His own death, in 1592, came while he was still revising.
