Kaufmann’s English is still in copyright; the sense of the maxim is stable across translations, and the German is the authority. Nietzsche is not offering comfort. He is saying that meaning is a load-bearing wall. Viktor Frankl later cited the maxim from Auschwitz, which changed its temperature without changing its wording. Read them together on the echoes shelf, and do not let either one recruit the other.
