Jalal al-Din Rumi

1207–1273

Poet of the Masnavi

The Masnavi begins with a reed cut from the reed-bed, complaining of separation. Later English made him a poet of vague uplift. Reynold Nicholson’s translation keeps the longing, and the theology, in the sentence.
