Socrates

469–399 BCE

Athenian philosopher

He wrote nothing. What we have is Plato’s Socrates, and Xenophon’s, and a death sentence. The lines kept here are the ones a city would still rather not hear from a defendant.

In the canon

  1. We ought not to retaliate or render evil for evil to any one, whatever evil we may have suffered from him.Plato, Crito
  2. The unexamined life is not worth living.Plato, Apology
