Socrates wrote nothing. Plato, who was there or close to it, gives him this sentence at his trial in 399 BCE, when an offer is on the table: stop philosophizing and live. He refuses. “I know that I know nothing” is a later proverb, not a line of the Apology. What he claims is narrower, and braver: he knows he does not possess the wisdom others pretend to.
