Suetonius reports that Caesar quoted a Greek proverb, “let the die be thrown,” as he crossed out of his province with an army, which Roman law forbade. The Latin “alea iacta est” is the later famous form of a gambler’s sentence. He was not describing courage in the abstract. He was ending the Republic.
