The poem’s men are stuffed, leaning together, unable to pray. The ending is an anti-apocalypse: no revelation, only a trailing off. Eliot later converted and wrote poems that believe in a different ending. He did not retract this one. It remains the modern image of a catastrophe that is mostly exhaustion.
